November 2008
Four stalwart stencilers showed up for the November luncheon. They included Dave "Makin' Money" McDonald, Tom "Highfalutin'" Haines, Steve "Super Saver" Smith, and "Hundred Dollar" Bill Pitzer.
They sauntered across the street to Showmars for lunch to discuss their latest endeavors.
Pitzer said he was one of the last two graphic designers at The Charlotte Observer. At least they were smart enough to hold onto the best!
He gave some insight into the world of shrinking newspapers and said he would soon be teaching an online course on Adobe Flash.
Smith retold his story (for those who missed last month's meeting) about auditioning for stand up comedy contest in a swim suit with an inflatable frog around his waist.
Smith and Haines are teaming up to design a billboard celebrating Carrot Top's three million visitors to his show in Las Vegas. They plan to riff on the McDonald's "over three million served" slogan. Haines is Carrot Top's merchandise manager.
Haines appeared on the front page of the October 31 edition of the Charlotte Business Journal. He talked about bartering to get things he needed for his printing business.
McDonald, who, like Haines, is a native of Endicott, New York, brought him an authentic Cider Mill cinnamon doughnut and a fresh New York state apple.
McDonald announced that his "The Secret Adventures of Hamster Sam: Attack of the Evil Boll Weevils!" won a Moonbeam Children's Book bronze medal for best comic/graphic novel.
Also, the "Fingerprints" series that McDonald produced for local public television station WTVI has been nominated for a MidSouth Regional Emmy award.
In other news, Andy "Stacks O' Cash" Smith is now appearing on "The Not So Better Half Show" Sunday evenings from 10:00 p.m. to midnight on The Link 107.9 FM. You can listen to archived shows on the radio station's Web site.
Smith is also illustrating Dean Koontz' "Nevermore" for Dabel Brothers Publishing. The series will be published in five issues from February through June of next year.
And Greg "Rolling-In-the-Dough" Russell has built a new Web site advertising his graphic design services: gregrussell.us
