October 2007
Our gaggle of cartoonists (or is it a flock? Or a brood?) met on a chilly Monday morning at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find. Dashing Dave McDonald nearly fainted when a whole four of us showed up. Also attending were Big Al Bigley, Randy Andy Smith, Stupefying Steve Smith (Not related to Andy. Or is he?) and Greedy Greg Russell. The herd of pencil pushers stampeded next door to Crisp, a restaurant which had just opened a few weeks earlier. Establishments in that space seem to come and go every six months. This one seemed a little better than the others, so maybe it will stick around a little longer. Munching sandwiches and salads, the troop talked about their latest projects. McDonald brought color samples of his Hamster Sam comic, which should be going to press any day now. The colors looked great, and the historical photos in the background worked very well. Like any good entrepreneur, he's having it printed in Hong Kong ... so don't let your children touch it. Just kidding! McDonald promises there will be no lead used in the printing of the book.
Andy Smith brought some pages he penciled for issue 18 of DC's "The All-New Atom" series. To the left is an image of Wonder Woman penciled by Smith and inked by Keith Champagne for that issue.
Bigley showed the pack some art he had done for a quarterly newsletter put out by Robert Kennedy Jr.'s Waterkeeper Alliance to educate folks on water conservation issues. His pencil work is shown to the right. The DC trading cards he was working on last time have been printed and are already showing up on eBay.
Russell brought the "How to Brew a Hot Brand" book he designed for the Brand Coaches. Steve Smith entertained the mob with his stories and promised to bring a new edition of the quarterly comic he creates for US Airways next time. After partaking of a healthy lunch, the flock swarmed back over to Heroes Aren't Hard to Find. Below is a photo of the gang taken by Heroes comic book genius Jason Wheatley. How is that to put a little fright in your Halloween? From left to right are Russell, Steve Smith, Andy Smith, Bigley and McDonald.
