October 2006Perhaps it's inevitable that during election time in November that even the By George contingency would experience low turnout. But no matter, November 2nd was a sunny day for Dave McDonald, Al Bigley and guests Lloyd (14-year-old foster child from Fayetteville, NC) and his CHS representative Tracey Starling. Lloyd is a quiet, pleasant and respectful young man who exhibits great potential, as evidenced by the sample pencil drawings he brought along. He enjoys reading manga comics, as well as Marvel titles and his favorite comic strips "Garfield" and "Dennis the Menace." Kudos to Marcus Hamilton, who had planned on attending; but got a last minute project thrown at him with a strict deadline. We spun this into a real-life "lesson" for Lloyd; as this type of thing is "par for the course" in the biz. Al Bigley was most helpful, and with sharpie in hand showed Lloyd how to "simplify" when drawing clothing; an aspect Lloyd said he had trouble with. Al shared some possible routes to cartooning careers and spoke of his many years of experience in technical illustration, comic books, storyboards and concept work. Thanks also to Shelton for allowing us to meet in his comic shop, which Lloyd soaked up in all it's glory, as well as furnishing Lloyd with a good supply of freebie comic books to take home. -- Dave McDonald Stay tuned for news on the next meeting. |
