The By George! group is a loose association of illustrators and cartoonists who meet approximately once a month to share notes, learn from one another and enjoy each other's company in honor of the late Charlotte Observer cartoonist and National Cartoonist Society president George Breisacher.

Dark Pain

Behold! The Dark Pain

Where have our heroes gone? Many have been missing in action since March of this year.

Some citizens echo the heroes' complaints that it is a "pain in the ass" to get to the noontime meetings as a reason for their departure. Others speculate that they have been replaced by alien doppelgangers.

Then, suddenly, on a bright August morning, five figures silhouetted the door at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find. Claiming to be members of the By George group of cartoonists, they marched across the street to Showmars where they held their clandestine meeting.

One, claiming to be the one known as Andy Smith talked of his recent activities. He is currently working on art for a video game. He has also acted in a pilot for a television show. His radio show continues on 107.9 the Link. His Armor X comic is an iPhone app. He will be a featured speaker at the Southeast Chapter National Cartoonists Society meeting in Asheville in September. (For more info on that, click HERE.) And he just bought a new Wacom Cintiq pad. His accomplishments seemed almost ... superhuman.

Captain Samsonite 7

The one who claimed to be Dave McDonald said he was working on a new Hamster Sam book and possibly characters for a new book. He was planning on putting some of his comics on the Web to garner more exposure.

One claimed to be Steve Smith. With a name like that, who knows? He handed out copies of the seventh issue of "Captain Samsonite," the comic he produces for the baggage handlers at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. It was so good, the others encouraged him to find a way to distribute the comic to all U.S. Airways passengers.

Another, claiming to be Jack Chapman, showed three excellent caricatures he had done.

The last, who claimed to be Greg Russell, showed a caricature he had recently completed for a Web site.

With that morning's news that Disney would acquire Marvel Entertainment, there was plenty to discuss.

The group also discussed the recent auditions for the fourth Spider-Man movie that were held across the street from Heroes. To show their acting chops and score a part in the movie, the group (along with alleged Heroes manager Shawn Reynolds) took this photo ...

Dark Pain acting

Are the members of the Dark Pain who they say they are? Or are they just clever posers? To find out, attend the next By George meeting, which will be held in the evening under the cover of the night. The one who calls himself Dave will provide more details on a need-to-know basis.

Until then, keep your nose clean!
