The By George! group is a loose association of illustrators and cartoonists who meet approximately once a month to share notes, learn from one another and enjoy each other's company in honor of the late Charlotte Observer cartoonist and National Cartoonist Society president George Breisacher.

August 2008

This month's By George! meeting took place during the dog days of summer. Actually, they weren't exactly dog days. They were more like puppy days. They might even be considered downright kitteny.

Captain Samsonite

Perhaps "the busy days of summer" would be a better description. Only three stalwart cartoonists showed up, and they were all in a hurry.

Tom "Dash" Davidson, Steve "The Sprint" Smith and Greg "Run Like Hell" Russell decided to eat next door at Crisp. Smith was in such a hurry, he only got to munch on a soda.

Davidson was pleased to announce that his homemade comics were selling very well at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find.

Smith brought the latest edition his Captain Samsonite comic in which he interviews a real honest-to-God space shuttle pilot.

Russell brought a caricature that he drew of a local counselor/therapist/dandy.

All three were surprised to learn that they all learned to appreciate comic books and drawing when they were sick as children. They also discussed their favorite childhood comics.

Russell passed on Tom Haines' "Who Killed the Electric Car?" DVD on to Smith. Davidson has dibs on it next. Maybe the entire group can eventually see it and have a discussion afterwards. It will be called their "Drawing a Conclusion" meeting.

It should be noted that Andy Smith has announced on his MySpace site that he will begin co-hosting a weekly radio show on 107.9 the Link beginning Sunday, September 7.

All three cartoonists had to leave in a hurry, so there is no smoldering hot beefcake photo for you to feast your eyes on. Maybe next month ...
