July 2006On a sweltering hot July day, six of us met at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find. Some genius decided we should go next door to the newly established Corner Place Delicatessen for lunch. The decor was similar to the former Schlotzsky's Deli, but the menu was a little different. David McDonald and I enjoyed delicious, grilled grouper sandwiches. Mexican fruit drinks were available, and tropical music filled the restaurant. For some reason, Those With Hair sat on one side of the table and Those With Little Or No Hair sat on the other, and we talked about our latest projects. We were graced with the presence of Kevin Siers, who we haven't seen in a while. Brian Leonard has become a regular. Tom Haines said his book is coming along nicely. He showed us a drawing Andy Smith did for one of the chapters. Tom will be in the silk-screen business in about a month, and he is offering to trade printed t-shirts for illustrations for his book. And his next comedy class begins on September 11 at the Comey Zone in Matthews. Andy is still working on Wildstorm Comics' 6-issue mini-series "Claw the Unconquered." He is also doing improv comedy every Friday at 9:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Comedy Theater at the corner of Plaza Road and Central Avenue next to Joe's Raw Bar.
Dave McDonald showed us the poster he illlustrated and designed for the fire department. He said he will be doing a "chalk talk" presentation in front of some school kids soon. He also tossed out a demo of his cartoon voices. Dave also reminded everybody of the Southeast Chapter of the National Cartoonist Society's annual meeting in Gainesville, GA from November 3rd through 5th. Yours truly passed around some character sketches that I'm doing for a local investment banker's upcoming book. Here's an image of IB Man in action. After our meeting, we marched back to Heroes where Jason Wheatley took our group photo.
Pictured above are Kevin Siers, Andy Smith, Greg Russell, Brian Leonard, Tom Haines and Dave McDonald. The next meeting will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 28 in the vicinity of Heroes Aren't Hard to Find. Probably inside.
