July 2008
The few, the proud, the Marion Cunninghams met at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find on a bright June day for their monthly pow-wow and marched across the street to Ho Ho Cherry House Chinese restaurant.
With a name like that, they weren't certain what kind of service they would get, but it was sure to be an adventure.
In attendance were: Dave (Darleen) McDonald, Tom (Thomasina) Haines, Greg (Ginger) Russell and newcomer Tom (Trixie) Davidson.
McDonald showed off his design for Beamer the Reading Bug, the new York County library mascot.
When Davidson brought up the excellent cartoonists' question: "What's your favorite pen?" McDonald trumpeted the virtues of the Japanese JetPen that he discovered while exhibiting at HeroesCon 2008.
He also revisited the idea of suggesting that The Charlotte Observer run a comic strip by local cartoonists. All attending were up for it. Are there any other takers out there?
Haines didn't talk much. He appeared upset at having to share the conversation with another Tom.
He did bring a copy of the DVD "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Russell snatched it away from him, obviously excited about copying watching it.
Davidson exhibited his homemade comics at a table across from McDonald at the Heroes convention. He is currently art director at Belk and studied art at The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.
His instructor was a co-creator of Howdy Doody, animated the hippo dance scene in "Fantasia" and many Donald Duck shorts.
Davidson brought plenty of sample comics for everyone to take home.
Russell announced that he will be producing and drawing cartoons for Rob Slee's next "Midas Marketing" book.
Other than that, not much happened. Ho Ho Cherry certainly didn't live up to its name.
Disappointed, the cumbersome quartet lumbered back to Heroes for the spectacular beefcake shot you see to the left. From left to right are Davidson, McDonald, Haines and Russell.
