The By George! group is a loose association of illustrators and cartoonists who meet approximately once a month to share notes, learn from one another and enjoy each other's company in honor of the late Charlotte Observer cartoonist and National Cartoonist Society president George Breisacher.

May 2008

On a sunny afternoon in May, four HARDCORE members of the By George! group met at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find for lunch and very deep, profound discussion. The brainiacs included Dave McDonald, Tom Haines, Andy Smith and Greg Russell.

They decided to trek across the street to Anntony's Caribbean Cafe. There, they were offered the choice of 1/4 chicken white meat, 1/4 chicken dark meat or half a chicken regular, all white or all dark!!?? Haines volunteered to try the mutant chicken ... and lived to tell about it.

Haines handed out notebooks emblazoned with his company logo: Stand Up Stuff. He recently purchased a license to print Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity clothing and memorabilia. He has some great ideas to market their cute and cuddly mascot ... a fire truck.

Smith brought a portfolio of his incredible work.

McDonald snagged the marketing chores for the York County Library. He'll be working with a somewhat cuter mascot than Haines: a firefly.

Life Connections

Russell is wrapping up production of motivational book. After 40-some cover redesigns and a name change from "Connections" to "Life Connections," this appears to be the final version.

The group chatted about a variety of topics including former member Gerry Mooney's photos from the Reuben Awards ceremony in New Orleans. You can find his photos here.

Haines also brought up George Briesacher's idea to feature local artists' cartoon strips in The Charlotte Observer. Everyone agreed that it was a good idea. If anyone knows how to put such a plan into action, please contact one of the members of the group.

And finally, Haines and Smith related the experience of watching the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" Apparently, that's a movie we should all make an effort to see. Then we could discuss it amongst ourselves at the next meeting.

By George!

After lunch, the group paraded back to Heroes where Shawn Reynolds took this photo of them admiring Jessica Alba's breasts. From left to right are: Tom Haines, Greg Russell, Andy Smith and Dave McDonald.

Stay tuned for information on the next By George! meeting. If you want to be HARDCORE, you'll be there!
