The By George! group is a loose association of illustrators and cartoonists who meet approximately once a month to share notes, learn from one another and enjoy each other's company in honor of the late Charlotte Observer cartoonist and National Cartoonist Society president George Breisacher.

Hamster Sam poster

This month, three ornery hombres met at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find for the first By George! meeting of the new year. They were Dave "Desperado" McDonald, Steve "Saddle-sore" Smith and Greg "Rootin' Tootin'" Russell who brought his wife "Get Me the Noose!" Norma.

They sallied forth to Anntony's Caribbean restaurant for some delicious chicken.

Dave McDonald has been busy making appearances promoting his Hamster Sam book and teaching cartooning classes. To the right is a poster he designed for the South Carolina classrooms he visits. McDonald can now be proclaimed a Macintosh / Photoshop / Illustrator / InDesign expert. If you have any technical questions, call 555- ....

As an airline employee, Steve Smith has the opportunity to do a lot of traveling. He has recently taken his family to Las Vegas and Disney World.

Smith brought in his design for a Carrot Top billboard. Mr. Top liked it so much, he's going to use Smith's cartoons for posters and other promotional material.

Snacks On a Plane

Smith also brought a tin of nachos which he had covered with a caricature of Samuel L. Jackson exclaiming, " Everyone relax! I said there were 'snacks' on the plane!" Sales of the nachos helped raise money for airline employees who are injured on the job.

Ever one with the humorous story, Smith told of a high school talent show in which he dressed like Steve Martin and did his routine. The crowd went wild at the sight of him in his white suit and white hair. He said that just a taste of the fame that the real Steve Martin experienced was overwhelming.

wedding caricature

Greg Russell just finished work on Rob Slee's "Midas Marketing" book and brought in a caricature that he had drawn for a wedding invitation.

Although Andy "Sidesaddle" Smith was out rustlin' cows, he announced on his MySpace page that his "Not So Better Half" radio show now airs from 4-7:00 p.m. on The Link 107.9 FM.
