January 2007

The number of lunchers swelled from two to three in January. Among those dedicated (and lonely ... or bored) cartoonists were Dashing Dave McDonald, Tonsorial Tom Haines and Greasy Greg Russell.

They marched over to Anntony's, but they weren't open yet. They trudged over to Jersey Mike's, but they were too busy. The slogged over to Showmar's, and it was just right.

Greg returned Tom's book "Snafu - My Vietnam Vacation - 1969," which he was fortunate enough to get to read in advance. Do yourself and Tom a favor and ask for a copy to read. It's a fascinating, humorous memoir, and he's looking for some objective input before it goes to press.

Tom has also gotten his press up and running. If you need any t-shirts printed, he's the man to see.

Dave is beginning work on writing and producing some documentary segments for local PBS station WTVI. He plans to do the first on cartoonist Vernon Grant and another on the history of stock car racing.

Greg talked about his frustration of dealing with an author who wanted to change the name of his book for the second time and after it the cover and inside were ready for the press and a printer who didn't have a copy of QuarkXPress.

Unfortunately, none of the three were able to make it to the Scott McCloud appearance at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find or the 30th anniversary of its Charlotte MiniCon, but lots of cool things have been going on over there. Keep an eye on heroesonline.com for upcoming events.

Dave, Tom and Greg didn't bother to have their photo taken because they know what they look like, and so do you.

Show up next month, and perhaps their apathy will be elevated to ambiguity, and a group photo will be taken again.

Stay tuned for news on the February meeting.
